Learn the basics of mindfulness and how beneficial it is for the body, mind and spirit. Decades of research has shown that mindfulness can reduce the impact of stress on the body and mind and improve health and well-being.
The Essentials of Mindfulness is a 4-week course at the Elwood & St Kilda Neighbourhood Learning Centre. Enrolments will be opening in late 2025.
This short course will introduce participants to the essentials of what mindfulness is and how to practically apply it in everyday life to nurture well-being. The course is based on evidence-based, mindfulness techniques that are backed by the latest scientific research and are non-religious. The course explores key principles of mindfulness, how to bring it into daily life and simple practices for everyday use. It is designed for beginners and anyone looking to learn more about mindfulness and enhance their well-being.
The course is suitable for beginners and people for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. All classes are trauma-informed spaces of safety and support.
This course is led by Sally Richmond, an experienced and registered mindfulness teacher and Social Worker. She has worked in health and human services for more than 20 years. In this course, Sally brings her expertise in mindfulness, how states of stress and calm work in the body and her longstanding experience in mindfulness meditation and as allied health professional. Sally is experienced teaching mindfulness to diverse groups including people with anxiety, depression, significant health conditions, older people, NDIS participants, Aboriginal people and people who have experienced trauma. In each class, techniques are appropriately modified to suit the distinct needs of participants. Participants will be well-supported for the duration of the course and offered guidance about available mindfulness resources following the course.
This course includes four 1 hour classes. It is an in-person course at the Elwood and St Kilda Neighbourhood Learning Centre, 87 Tennyson St, Elwood. Cost for the 4 week course: $80/$55 concession.

Course Outline
This course is an introduction to the core foundations of mindfulness and how to apply it in your life. It is designed to equip you with a deeper understanding of what mindfulness is, the science of how our body and mind work in states of stress and calm and an introduction to the key mindfulness practices to apply in your everyday life.
The course includes 4 classes (1 hour each). Each class includes interactive teaching, guided mindfulness practices led by the teacher (10 - 15 minutes) and discussion.
Class 1 - The Basics of Mindfulness and how it Nurtures Well-being?
Class 2 - Understanding the Basics of Our Nervous System and Listening to the Body
Class 3 - Generating Self Compassion Towards Yourself
Class 4 - Bringing it all Together: How to Integrate Mindfulness into Your Everyday Life
